Memories are best when handmade, especially when the hands are yours.

Working with your hands is perhaps the best way to learn something new, which is why our Hands-on Workshops are crafted to live up to their name. These are built from interactions we’ve learned from ourselves and then built an experience around. Or even an itinerary, if a journey of learning is what you’re looking for.

These workshops cover cooking and dining experiences including cheese making, textile and fabric making like tie-and-dye and block printing, and visits to interactions to locals craftspeople, to name but a few. This ensures a wide range of experiences, each one of which will have leave you with memories made by hand. Yours, of course.

Let us know how much time you have on hand and we’ll craft an interaction that will have you rubbing your hands in glee.

Our team has marched (on their stomachs) across India and unearthed families that proudly showcase their traditions on their plates. Nair tharavads, Mappila mansions, Lepcha bungalows, Rajput havelis – there isn’t a home among these that won’t stuff you full with their culinary heritage. And the best part? Every single home you live at has a lady of the house who run cooking masterclasses specially for our guests.

So come, Breakaway. A state awaits. On your plate, where else?

We had a terrific time in general and Mary Anne specifically enjoyed interacting with local weavers observing and learning some techniques different from what she already knew. We will have no hesitation in recommending one of your tours to our family and friends. Some specifics: We were extremely happy with our driver Mohan. He was prompt and courteous and a very safe driver. When there was no guide with us he proved to be extremely knowledgeable in his own right and very protective of us when he drove us to restaurants for lunch (on days with no guide) and in the evening. (When there was a guide in the car he tended not to speak too much.) In general the guides were good. I would say highlights of the tour included the walk down the street in the village where everyone is a weaver (on the way to Pondicherry), the half day tour in Karaikudi with the guide from the Bangala that included the mansion houses and weaving center, the Meenakshi Temple and Chungadi saris in Madurai (your guide there was particularly good) and the next day with the same guide at the Gandhigram Center dying and weaving centers. I want to thank you again for everything you did before and during the tour to make our visit so successful. We had a lot of fun.

Travelling with Breakaway was a thoroughly professional experience. Their bespoke itineraries give access to aspects of India that are off the beaten path and fit my interests perfectly. Most important, as a woman traveling alone, I felt safe and in good hands every second of the way.

We have had several memorable 'dream breakaways'. We were both born and brought up in India, and now live abroad to pursue our respective careers. Although we have spent our childhood in India, it is no exaggeration to say that Breakaway is the gateway to our home country. Through Breakaway, we have met amazing artists, lived in beautifully maintained properties, and have got a truly local 'behind the scenes' experience. We admire Bindu's attention to detail in planning and her round-the-clock support during our travels. We are sharing some pictures from our enthralling trip to Jaipur. We loved the layers of history, the clash of colors, and the cacophony of sounds. We could appreciate all this and more because Breakaway ironed out the logistics and gave us access to normally off-limits experiences. We cannot wait to make some more memories.
