Experience India Through Curated Culinary Tours

Of all the ways to sample a state, the most memorable must surely be on your plate. And at Breakaway, we’ve curated some culinary tours of India for mouth-watering introductions to different cultures and communities. Are you ready to learn how to say “Hello” and “Could I have some more, please?” in different languages?.

Our team has marched (on their stomachs) across the country and unearthed culinary travel experiences to showcase different traditions on a plate. Nair tharavads, Mappila mansions, Lepcha bungalows, Rajput havelis – there isn’t a home among these that won’t stuff you full with their culinary heritage. And the best part? Every single home you live in has a lady of the house who runs cooking masterclasses specially for our guests.

At Breakaway, we bring to you the heart of culinary tourism in India through our well-thought-out itineraries.

Taste of lesser-known regional recipes, belonging to local families

Intimate interactions with local chefs

Hands-on masterclasses with community food specialists

Small group interactions in real Indian kitchens

Cultural food immersions curated with regional historians & guides

Access to food traditions, rituals & stories from every region

What goes into Breakaway’s culinary travel experiences

Our culinary travel experiences go beyond restaurants and city landmarks. They take you inside homes, local markets, community kitchens, farms, and heritage food spaces where authentic culinary travel experiences begin.

Each itinerary blends the flavours of regional cuisines with stories, rituals, and the warmth of India’s food culture. Whether you’re dining with a home chef in Rajasthan, tasting fresh spices in Kerala, or learning a forgotten recipe from a food historian, your journey reflects the heart of food tourism in India. Designed with care and curated personally, our tours help you experience culinary tourism in India as it’s meant to be: intimate, seasonal, rooted, and unforgettable.

Breakaway Highlights

Traveler Speak

Breakaway helped plan a short trip to Jaipur and Jaisalmer for my parents and I. The trip factored in all of our big and small needs, built in the right amount of rest and included excellent food options..Bindu was extremely responsive and happy to accommodate changes on the go, including a bunch of options for shopping. One of the things that makes breakaway special is their network of local contacts, drivers and guides. Breakaway was able to find us accommodation that provided the local flavour while being world class, guides who were (other than the one instance in Jaipur) knowledgeable, engaging and accommodating and local experiences that would be hard to find independently. A very well curated experience!

I’ve known Breakaway as a brand for over a decade, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beloved travel brands in the country. Breakaway's "State on the Plate " initiative is fantastic, and last evening had first hand experience of authentic Bengali cuisine at the home of food critic and writer, Rajashree. The pop-up meal was a delightful way to immerse in the culture and cuisine of Bengal. The spread included traditional dishes like Kosha Mangsho (mutton curry), Chingri Malai Curry (prawn curry), Luchi (fluffy deep-fried bread), Aloo Posto (potatoes cooked with poppy seeds) and much more. Look forward to more such experiences in the future.

Team Breakaway has been amazing in coordinating the travel and stay for our Company’s business travel all across India and Sri Lanka. Thank you Sonia for being so accommodating and supportive through last-minute flight changes, ensuring our team was taken care of from the mountains of Uttarakhand to the seaside towns in Sri Lanka. Thank you!

We had a terrific time in general and Mary Anne specifically enjoyed interacting with local weavers observing and learning some techniques different from what she already knew. We will have no hesitation in recommending one of your tours to our family and friends. Some specifics: We were extremely happy with our driver Mohan. He was prompt and courteous and a very safe driver. When there was no guide with us he proved to be extremely knowledgeable in his own right and very protective of us when he drove us to restaurants for lunch (on days with no guide) and in the evening. (When there was a guide in the car he tended not to speak too much.) In general the guides were good. I would say highlights of the tour included the walk down the street in the village where everyone is a weaver (on the way to Pondicherry), the half day tour in Karaikudi with the guide from the Bangala that included the mansion houses and weaving center, the Meenakshi Temple and Chungadi saris in Madurai (your guide there was particularly good) and the next day with the same guide at the Gandhigram Center dying and weaving centers. I want to thank you again for everything you did before and during the tour to make our visit so successful. We had a lot of fun.

Travelling with Breakaway was a thoroughly professional experience. Their bespoke itineraries give access to aspects of India that are off the beaten path and fit my interests perfectly. Most important, as a woman traveling alone, I felt safe and in good hands every second of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm a vegetarian/vegan- will there be options for me on this trip?

We ask our travellers about food allergies and aversions before they set out for our culinary travel experiences. We make sure there will be some options available for you. You may not have the variety in spread that the others in the group do, but that’s okay with most people.

Will the meat being used for demos/ lunch/dinner be halal?

We can check with the chef in advance and let you know before the culinary travel experience begins. There is a chance you may have to just skip a dish that doesn’t qualify for you

I have allergies to some foods, how can we ensure I don't have to worry about those?

We ask our travelers about food allergies and aversions before they begin our culinary travel experiences, and make sure there are some options available for you. You may not have the variety in spread that the others in the group do, but that’s okay with most people.

Can we do a hands-on cooking session when on this culinary tour?

We can set up a hands-on cooking workshop during some of our culinary tours, depending on the time available if you’re on a customised tour. On group tours, our itinerary is rather packed and there isn’t a lot of time to keep for a hands-on workshop which can easily take between 2-3 hours.

Will the chefs be sharing recipes for the dishes they do a demo on ?

We can request for this information to be shared, either when you’re at the demo, or then to be shared with you after.
