Textile Trails in Southern India
Travelling southwards from the mountains and valleys of the Himalayan foothills, the desert landscapes and fortified towns of western India, or from the crowded Gangetic floodplains, one enters into another world, a world of the southern people. South Indian textiles can be divided into 4 regions- AP, TN, Karnataka and Kerala.
The four states put together give us fabulous weaves like the ikat, telia rumals, gadwalls, venkatagiri, kalamkaris from Andhra, gulledgud, molakalmuru, ilkals from Karnataka. Kornaad, Karupur, Chungdi from Tamil Nadu and the Kosavu from Kerala just to mention a few.
Textile Trails in Kanchipuram
Cotton weaving In Tamil Nadu is widespread in Kanchipuram, Coimbatore, Salem, Pudukkotai, Madurai and Karur. The chungidi sarees of Madurai, kandangi saris of Chettinadu and the cotton/silk mixtures from Kurainadu are noteworthy. The cottons of Madurai and Salem, particularly the white veshtis (dhoti) with zari borders are known for their sturdy quality..
South Indian textiles have a glorious tradition going back about 50 centuries nourished by the creative and innovative energies of its craftsmen. Exactly how ancient it is remains a matter of speculation.
The textiles from Tamil Nadu can be routed on a map starting from Chennai where simple white vesthis (dhotis) with Zari border are woven in villages in and around Chennai.
